“Dexter” is my current favorite.
Dexter works as a blood analyst, but he kills people. Don’t worry. All people he kills are bad people who the laws and regulations can’t punish. If you hate crime scenes, I am afraid you won’t like this drama. Truth be told, I hate those scenes. Nevertheless, I am into the drama, though I sometimes spend a sleepless night… Several comical or soothing scenes prevent this drama from being a totally cruel drama.
I have watched episodes 1 through 6 of the season 1.

How many hours do you put in your language study?

As you know, I have been studying English. I try to study it every day. But I often fail to do it. Especially when I am very busy at work and I get worn out, I’ m not in the mood for doing anything but taking a good rest at home. Still I have to deal with household chores. I wish my son could help me with some of them. My husband insists that he does help me, but I am a little bit doubtful about it. Am I being selfish?

I am going off the point. Well, I have a question for you. How long do you study the language you want to master a day? One hour or two a day? Or do you put longer hours in your language study on weekends, because it is hard to secure time for yourself on weekdays?

“Mom, don’t worry about anything. I’m at your side. I can be a cook. I can clean the rooms. I can hang laundry outside. You can do whatever you want. That would please me.”
If my son gently said such a thing to me, I would be incredibly happy. (Never ever happen…)

Many Japanese companies increasingly put value on Group Management. No doubt that understanding consolidated accounting is indispensable especially for top management.

Research report on how to fall in sleep

The other day, I complained a little bit that I had a sleepless night. Then, my friend kindly gave me useful tips about how to fall in sleep. I have tried them for the past week, so I will report the result as follows.

1. Procedures my friend taught me
First, lie on your bed and rub your feet together.
Note: It would be better if you took a foot bath before going to bed. When winter comes, my feet get too sensitive to cold. I soaked my feet in hot water before I get into bed.

(If the above doesn’t work,) Second, imagine that you go to a movie theater, stay calm in a seat, and look for the letter “Sleep”

2. Results
Mostly, I was able to fall in sleep while I was rubbing my feet together.
Sometimes I had to imagine that I go to a theater, but I fell in sleep before I found the letter “Sleep.” Luckily, I’ve never seen the letter “Sleep”.

My friend’s magic worked very well for me beyond my belief. Awesome! I appreciate his valuable advice.

Trains in Japan (tip for people who want to know Japan)

Imagine you are in Japan. You want to drop by your friend’s place, so you have to take a train to go there. You wait for the train on the station platform you want to get on. Unfortunately, the train is delayed a couple of minutes for some reason. In this case, you have a right to be frustrated. We take it for granted that trains should arrive on time, though we rarely snap at the train staff members or blame them for the delay harshly.

“Ladies and gentlemen, there was an accident on the railroad resulting in death. We have to keep you waiting for a while. We sincerely apologize for causing you trouble.” or “The train bound for XX will arrive a few minutes behind the schedule. We are terribly sorry.” You would sometimes hear such an announcement on the platform.

Actually, my train was delayed a few minutes the other day. Hearing the announcement briefing the delay, I got irritated a little bit secretly. Am I strict?

How much effect does “transcription” bring to English learners?

I’ve heard many times that transcription is helpful to you for raising your listening ability.
Placing a piece of paper and a CD player on the table at home, I once tried to transcript English as much as I could, but I gave it up very soon, because it was troublesome when I had to fast forward or backward the player many times. I felt a waste of time and tired.

What do you think of transcription for your language study? Should I resume transcribing English if I want to improve my listening ability? Or doesn’t it matter much even if I try hard to transcribe English?

Don’t get me wrong. I don’t think that there is a rosy road to master a language. That being said, if there were an easy way to use English like a native English speaker, I’d definitely want to know the secret. That sounds like I am lazy.

How important is the Australian dollar?

Every morning, an internal-office email provides me with brief currency info. It lists four currency rates against the Japanese yen. These currencies are US$, EURO, Sterling pound, and the Australian dollar. For example, I got to know US$ 1 was Yen 89.16 the other day. Honestly speaking, I have a question about the list.

I understand why US$, EURO and Sterling pound info is presented. They are very crucial currencies. With those foreign currencies and yen currency, we usually sell or purchase goods. But I don’t see why the Australian dollar was chosen. I don’t intend to insult the Australian dollar, though.

Privately, I have just concluded that there are two reasons behind that.
1. In Australia, workers are positioned into agriculture, production, and service business, respectively. So, a currency used in such a country can be a barometer to measure how a variety of industries are influenced by the fluctuation of currencies.
2. Though Australia is a developed country, the movement of the Australian dollar is highly associated with that of the US dollar. Thanks to such close connection, you can guess to a point how the movement of the world axis currency gives an impact on economy of other developed countries.

The above mentioned is my silly idea. I still wonder why.

What would you do on a sleepless night?

Last Wednesday night, I had a hard time getting to sleep. I fell in sleep around midnight, but it didn’t last long. I woke up shortly for no reason. Since then, I had been unable to sleep until around 5 o’clock. Due to lack of sleep, I made a mistake, when I was making a brief presentation about my assignment to my boss.

During this sleepless night, all I did was to try to rack my brains and come up with a way to sleep. But no idea came to me. I was so bored that I turned on my PC to take a look at some interesting news.My body absolutely needed sleep, but there must have something that didn’t let me to get it. Was I too exhausted to heal myself? It could be.

I believe that you have ever spent sleepless nights despite your desire to sleep. In that case, what did you do to resolve such a problem? What did you do to kill time?

Without a good sleep, I couldn’t work effectively.

Quentin Tarantino will be appearing in a Japanese TV commercial

This news is brand new. Director Quentin Tarantino will show up in a Japanese TV commercial for Softbank, a telecom company with huge sales and net income.

The company’s commercial series relating to mobile phone are well known here. In there, two Japanese famous actresses, an American man, and a dog play Mother, Daughter, Brother, and Father (Interestingly, Dog plays Father), respectively. With comical and witty plot lines, these commercials have been popular here.

According to the company’s PR today, Tarantino san has joined these unique characters as “Uncle Tara”. This announcement amazed me very much. I am very curious to know how well this talented director worked as actor in the commercial. This commercial is coming soon. I can’t wait to see it. I wish somebody could tell me exactly when I should turn on the TV to watch him, because I don’t watch TV very much.

I wonder if he has ever shown up in a TV or radio commercial in the US.
