My dream

One of my dreams is to be a perfect translator who everybody can count on. I sometimes have to email my counterpart overseas or translate Japanese documents into English for them. My working environment provides me good opportunities. I really thank my boss who understands what I want to do and trusts me.

I don’t think my English is enough to be called professional. It may be okay when I email my friends casually. However, when it comes to business, it is another story. I still have to study it hard.

Translating Japanese into English is a creative job for me. Strange as it may sound, I often enjoy the process as a product designer in R&D does. When somebody appreciates my work, it gives me a sense of happiness.

I wish I could translate all kinds of Japanese documents into English as a pro. I believe that keeping writing in English must expand my possibility. I hope my dream will come true.

Batman begins

Now I remember I watched “Batman Begins” starring Christian Bale before, though I’m not sure exactly when I watched it on TV. Given the release took place around 2005, I guess it was somewhere between 2006 and 2008. Because of household work to be done, it was nearly impossible for me to focus on the movie. I think I know the outline, but I can’t remember the details. Now that I’ve got a kick out of the sequel “The Dark Knight”, it is high time to watch the first movie again so that I can review it or compare these two movies.

Speaking of Christian Bale, he starred in “Empire of the Sun” directed by Steven Spielberg, right? At the time, he was a boy, but his performance as Jim fascinated me.

I wonder which movie I should rent first, “Benjamin”, “Twilight” or “Batman”. In the meantime, “Inglorious Bastards”, my other interest, might be in store at a rental shop nearby…

Benjamin & Vampire

Finally my break is about to be over. I had more time to myself with joy. Watching two DVDs during the period really delighted me. Speaking of DVDs, I wanted to rent “Benjamin Button” or “Twilight”, but unfortunately I found they were all rented out. I have figured out that there are some people out there who want to watch DVDs in peace at home, instead of spending much money in an amusement park or somewhere during long holidays, like I do. I don’t like crowded places. Getting on the crowded commuter train every weekday morning is enough for me.

I am off the track now… What I was going to say was about the movies I had failed to rent. I believe you know some about “Benjamin Button”. Brad Pitt played the lead there, right? The plot is that the main character is born as an old man and getting younger and younger. It’s a very unique happening, which never ever happens in this real world.

“Twilight” may not be as famous as “Benjamin Button”. I have heard that it is a love story between a vampire and a girl. This movie is also a fiction. Even so, it looks very attractive to a mother of a boy like me, who was, I bet, a girl many years ago.

I might rent them some day when I have time to kill.

My bangs

When my bangs grow long and they are about to interrupt my eye vision, I cut them myself. Honestly speaking, I want to go to a beauty salon to have them cut nicely. But they keep me waiting long, and just having my bangs cut costs me 525 yen (including consumption tax). So it is wise of me to save time and money by doing it myself.

When I cut my bangs, I have to close one of my eyes not to allow hair crumbs to enter my eyes. So it is different, compared to when you do it with both of your eyes open.

I have just cut my bangs, brushed my hair and looked at me in the mirror. Oh my gosh! I blew it. I cut them shorter then I had anticipated. My eyebrows show up from my bangs n an awkward way. Ugly!

I wish my bangs could grow much faster than usual in time for my first working day after this long break. I have to go to work day after tomorrow. Now I feel as if I look like a Pierrot. Please don't laugh at my appearance.

I will read a textbook

Our department staff members started study meetings regarding IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards) about a month ago. We studied the very basic rules of accounting procedures, such as presentation of Financial Statements, how Leases are booked, how to cope with Inventories, in the past meetings. I feel how hard it is to comprehend those Financial Standards.

These meetings proceeded this way: One or two staff members in charge of each accounting title make a presentation about a certain accounting topic, followed by the Q & A session.

The next topic is about Financial Products. This meeting is scheduled in two weeks. I am embarrassed to say I don’t know Financial Products very well. All I know is that they should be revalued at each quarter end if their market value declines.

Before the meeting two weeks later, I had better read a textbook, otherwise, I would be in the middle of nowhere during the meeting. I hope reading such a textbook will help me boost my limited knowledge of Financial Products.

The Dark Knight

Today’s movie was The Dark Knight, which I rented yesterday. I had long waited to watch it, since this movie was a big hit. So I was happy when I found all of the DVDs weren’t rented out at a rental shop nearby.

I assumed that it would be a simply happy ending movie, such as a hero beating out a devil, but it wasn’t. The movie seemed to dare not to draw a clear line between good and evil. Even the good can be evil, after things put him in deep trouble and then he has to face a severe situation. People, who are sometimes inclined to stick to their ego, can make a right decision to move forward hand in hand. I feel this movie has a deep meaning in it.

The performance of Heath Ledger as Joker really mesmerized me. It is no wonder he won the Oscar after his death. I bet he deserved it. His figure as a villain was awfully scary enough to freak me out. I wonder how this actor turned himself into that Satan. His efforts as a professional actor paid off in the movie. I feel that way.

This movie seems to be good for listening English. I may watch it tomorrow, checking what the characters say in English. I wish I could understand as many as lines in English.

Brokeback Mountain

I watched the movie “Brokeback Mountain” last night. This was one of the movies I had wanted to watch for a long time. It was nominated at the Academy Award one or two years ago. I read somewhere that Hearth Ledger, who played the lead in the movie, died of overdose. That is how I got to be curious to know about this movie.

I did expect too much from this movie, but I shouldn’t have. It depicted love of gays, and the scenery of the shooting location, surrounded by affluent nature, was very beautiful. But that was just it. Honestly speaking, I didn’t get what message the director wanted to send through this cowboy’s movie. On the whole, it was a bit boring. It took about two hours to finish watching it. But I felt as if it lasted much longer.

The above is my impression. I know there are many viewers out there who highly acclaim this movie. Unfortunately, this wasn’t a cup of my tea.

We have five holidays in a row now

We’ve got lucky! Japan has national holidays of September 21st and 23rd. The former is called Respect for the Aged Day, and the latter Autumnal Equinox Day. If a weekday falls between two holidays, the weekday automatically becomes a holiday. This is our holiday system. That is why we have five consecutive holidays starting today. I don’t have to work in the office for the time being, which pleases me very much.

My son’s school is also closed till next Wednesday. He will be playing with his friends. I urged him not to forget to do his homework first. As for homework, he is a slow starter like many other kids, which is a headache to me.

Unfortunately, my husband will go to work. His company has a different calendar where the management doesn’t take national holidays into consideration. I feel a bit sorry for him.

At any rate, I am happy to make more time to myself than usual. I have a couple of DVDs I am eager to watch. I am enjoying watching one of them tonight or later.

I have a bad habit…

Don’t blame me on this. I have an unfavorable habit. Sometimes (No!!! Very often, actually…) I want to eat some sweets before going to bed. Today, I was eating a piece of pie secretly an hour and a half ago. Unfortunately, my son caught me, gazed at me for a moment silently, and rushed to his father. I bet he must have spoken ill of me. Actually, I tried to eat it behind their back, but I couldn’t make it, regrettably.

I know very well that eating sweets very late at night doesn’t keep you in good shape at all. You might end up going to the trouble to lose your health. (This is the worst scenario, though.) But for no reason I can’t stop this bad habit. How embarrassing it is to confess this here. I am like a little kid. Don’t say “Yuko, act your age”, please. I believe that sweets have a miracle power to heal me at the end of the day.

Job performance review

This morning, I had one-hour meeting with my direct boss to talk about my job performance for the first half of Year 2009. I got positive feedback from him, which delighted me very much. I was very busy especially this April and May. Honestly speaking, sometimes I was about to go ballistic and throw away my imminent task. I didn’t, though. Thanks to my coworkers and my boss, I think I overcame my difficulties.

Besides my regular job, I was assigned to instruct a girl who joined the company this April. At first, I didn’t know how to cope with this mission at all, but as time went by, I got to know how to help her get oriented in the workplace. She is polite, smart and positive, so I really enjoy having a conversation with her. My boss complimented me on this point in the meeting, too. My mentoring period will be over at the end of this month, since she has grown up as a decent business woman. I feel a little empty for no reason.

I have concluded that my job performance for this half of the year was rated higher more than I had anticipated. I wish I could be paid more!!!

I don’t know about poetry very much but…

Honestly, I wasn’t into poetry. I learned a lot of Japanese poems when I was a student. But any of them couldn’t impress me very much. I was sometimes pushed to learn some poems by heart before a test. That was tough, because it wasn’t fun at all. Don’t get me wrong. I tried to get what was wonderful in poetry, but in vain.

Several years ago, I was enjoying watching an American TV drama. One of the main characters happened to quote a part of a poem, which deeply touched me with no reason. I wanted to know the whole of the poem and then I searched for it using Google right away. I finally found it. It was “Stopping by woods on a snowy evening” written by Robert Frost.

I don’t know how to explain this poetry very well, but I think I could see a man standing by woods, thinking of things to be done, but wanting an eternal rest somewhere in his heart facing severe reality. This poetry basically describes a dead silence, which makes the sound of the harness bell outstanding. The whole place is covered with beautiful white snow, but somehow it feels sad.

Maybe this work is very famous in the U.S., right?
Speaking of Robert Frost, I also love “The road not taken”.

I have finished reading three books

I am happy that I finished reading three books this week. Honestly, I thought it would be impossible for me to read through as many as three books within this week. But I managed to do that.

Two of those books were about accounting. I learned a couple of things, such as how cash flow statements have a relationship with B/S (balance sheets) and P/L (profit and loss statements), what a marginal profit is, and whether a company’s operation should close if it has fallen into the red. It was a bit difficult for me to understand all of the contents perfectly, but I am sure they were worth reading.

The remaining book was written by a man who was once President of a women's underwear company. Currently, he is enjoying his own life after retirement, though. He was well-known for succeeding in cutting overtime when he was the top of the company. This book is based on his valuable experience, telling you how to work effectively and productively. The way he instructed his employees seemed to be cruel at times, but I think he proved that he was right, because the company’s sales continued growing and the employees ended up being more proud of their company.

Reading these kinds of books was helpful for me to increase my knowledge.
I wonder what book or novel I am going to read.

Accounting is difficult to understand

These days, my husband often borrows books about finance and accounting in the library nearby. It seems he is eager to increase his knowledge about accounting and finance (if any…), because he has realized how important it is to be versed in numbers.

Unfortunately, he has no idea what bookkeeping is. I believe bookkeeping is the base for preparing financial statements. If you want to make an analysis on a company’s profit and loss statements, knowledge of booking surely helps you understand them.

There are some books published out there with a great catch phrase of “You can comprehend accounting, even if you are unfamiliar with bookkeeping.” As a matter of fact, these catchy words tempted my husband into borrowing as many basic accounting books as he can. However, I have often noticed he ended up just turning over pages.

So I sometimes read the books that he gladly borrowed but gave up reading halfway. My work has much to do with finance and accounting, so I surely can get a kick out of reading them. I try to explain to my husband but it is hard for him to get what I say about accounting procedures.
An hour ago, I tried to describe a certain accounting title, but I failed to make him understood it. My explanation may have been bad, though…

Caserta

“Yuko, do you happen to know this palace?” Lying on his bed, my husband, who was reading today’s morning paper, asked me pointing to a beautiful picture in the paper. “Let me see. What is it? I have never seen it before. It says this palace is called Caserta. I do not know the name. Where is it? ”

Using the Google search engine on the internet, I started looking into this palace right away. I found that Wikipedia explained about the palace. According to the explanation, the palace was registered as one of the world heritages in the 1990’s. It is very attractive palace with a big canal and a high waterfall. I did not know Italy has such a splendid place at all.

I wish I could go to Italy to see the palace right with my eyes. If you have ever visited it, please tell me what impression you had.

E-learning

I have just started e-learning about International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). At first, I assumed that it was so difficult and challenging for me that I would not be able to acquire anything at all. However, believe it or not, I am enjoying myself with this e-learning program now. All explanations are written in English, but Japanese audio messages are added here and there, which assists me understand those English explanations. This e-learning program was designed to provide learners the basic knowledge of the international standards, so if you have experience working in the accounting department for many years, I bet you will enjoy this e-learning and obtain new knowledge that is likely to benefit you in future.

This e-learning covers many rules and regulations relevant to IFRS. I am afraid that it will take me a lot of hours to complete studying it. As a matter of fact, I have no idea when I can finish it, but at least I can say I won’t give up halfway.

Now, I am studying the section “Inventories”. My work has almost nothing to do with the inventory management, so I am struggling a bit. Strange as it may sound, it is fun.

I was worried

The other day, around three o’clock a.m., my son suddenly woke me up saying “Mom, my nose is bleeding.” He sometimes has a bloody nose, so it is not rare to see his bleeding. Usually, I don’t have any concern about it, but this time the situation clearly looked different.

“Mom, I can’t stop this bleeding. Besides, I have a slight headache and ringing in my right ear. I can’t explain how bad it is, though.”

I stuffed a tissue in his nose nostril. I had to change it many times, because tissue was soaked with his blood instantly. The situation lasted more than fifteen minutes. Usually, it stops within five minutes, though.

Now, my son is doing fine. That was a relief for me. My mother advised me not to worry too much about it, saying this muggy and humid weather just caused such bleeding. I will wait and see. If necessary, I have to take him to a general hospital to get his health condition thoroughly checked.

Chatting in English

Thanks to my boss’ proposal, my section got started to have lunch time chatting in English. He invited more than ten staff members to join him in advance. In fact, the five members of them attended the gathering. I was one of them. Each of us had each own English level.

At first, I felt so nervous that I did not know even what I was eating. But time went by, we started feeling at ease enough to talk about a couple of topics, such as lunch, family and traveling, actively. To my surprise, everybody in the meeting room looked happy, and they seemed to want more time to talk in English when the lunch end bell mercilessly rang. Fabulous!

We were supposedly holding another chatting time next Wednesday. However, one of the attendees mildly expressed his opposition to us. Guess the reason. He shyly said that he had already decided to take a day off from work that day, and he wanted us to change it to another day. Wow, it was clear to me that he had a good drive to speak up in English.

I wish we could continue this nice meeting longer.

Annual medical checkup

I took an annual medical checkup this morning. The menu consisted of a lot of checks, such as blood, weight, height, eye, urine, stool, bowel, stomach, etc.
It started around 8 o’clock and ended around 10 o’clock.

Before my stomach check, I got a shot near my left shoulder to prevent the movement of stomach. It was so painful that I unexpectedly had a grim expression on my face in front of the nurse who gave me the shot. She showed her sympathy to me. I was about to shed a tear.
During the check, I was told to swallow white liquid called barium.
The taste was very awful. How could they possibly have pushed me to swallow such a terrible thing?

I was very relieved after all of the medical checks were over. I once got back to the office, but I had no energy left to work there. I left the office after a while to take a good rest at home.

If you swallow barium, you should try to get it out from your body right away. Otherwise, it would clot, hurt your bowels, and you would end up seeing a doctor. To avoid such a situation, I am drinking tea or juice to make my bowel movement smooth.
