License

Ages ago, I passed a test supported by the Japanese government. It was not relevant to English, though I remember I was incredibly happy when I found my name on the bulletin board presenting the names of examinees who passed.

At the time, I was struggling with English. My Toeic score was less than 700 points. I was unable to see any improvement in my English. I wanted to take a rest from studying English for a while. Instead, I began studying the Japanese rules and regulations on my own to get this national license.

Regrettably, most of all I memorized tooth and nail have slipped my mind, so it will take time for me to remember. But this license is my treasure, since I could put it on my resume if I were out of work and started job hunting.

On a scale of one to five, it is two.

In my view, this book doesn’t include brand new ideas.
I expected that I would know how to study English more effectively from one of the chapters relating English. However, I figured it out that it is not so worth reading, since all he says is well known idea.

He wrote, “You do not need to get along with anybody.” I am for this idea. On the other hand, I am afraid he can’t respect people who he thinks are inferior to him. If that is true, I feel sorry for him.

Statements of cash flows

(I am still studying CF. Don’t be hard on me, please)

CF means the flows of cash and cash equivalents during a certain period. In other words, CF shows what activity increased or decreased money. This time, I don’t explain what cash equivalents are. (If you want to know them, tell me.) I will focus on cash on hand only, so that you can understand CF more easily.

Example

You had 1,000 yen as at Dec 31,2008. A month later, you had 3,500 yen as at Jan 31, 2009. How did you gain the increase of 2,500 yen during the period?
Please consider it in view of the 3 activity categories below.

1. Operating activity
You work as a translator.^^ You received 4,000 yen from a translation company.
(+4,000yen increase)

2. Investing activity
You bought a building at 10,000yen. The building will be used as your workplace, that is, you invested money for your rosy future in advance.^^
(-10,000yen decrease)

3. Financing activity
You borrowed 8,500 yen from a bank to buy the building, mentioned above, since you were short of cash.
(+8,500 yen increase)

I will summarize the above movements.
*Cash you had as at Dec 31 : 1,000
*Increase by operating activity: +4,000
*Decrease by investing activity: -10,000
*Increase by financing activity +8,500
*Therefore, cash you had as at Jan 31 : 3,500

Finally, you have got to know the flows of cash in January 2009. Congratulations.
This is an easy and simple example. As a matter of fact, preparing CF is very tough and annoying work.

Thank you for reading.

Calm down

When somebody asks me a question in the office and it seems to me a little complicated, I have a tendency to be in a panic and unable to think of anything. At the time, I try to calm myself down first. But I figure it out that all of my efforts end up in vain.

The other day, a man, who is in a managerial position, asked me a question. I failed to answer it right. Come to think of it, I could have made it if I were listening to his inquiry with poise, because I remember checking the related document before.

Unfortunately, I was born to be foolish enough to instantly forget what I went through before. Once I go blank, I strongly feel tense. That situation puts me in more trouble.

At least, I want to learn the ropes to get myself together whenever I have to field a question. Nevertheless, I let myself down every time I realize I am silly.

I have finished reading this book. I think I’ve got to know the key points for preparing statements of CF, at least. Concerning how to cope with statements of CF of an overseas subsidiary, I still have to study. It is difficult to understand how to adjust differences arising from foreign currency exchange rates.

I highly recommend you to read this book.

Translation into Japanese

My boss sent me an email and asked me to translate it into Japanese. At first, I was afraid that I was able to make it. Working for my team requires technical knowledge, though the level of my knowledge is low compared with the others.

I think I had no difficulty translating it. My translation made sense to my boss, who once worked overseas. I was relieved.

About two months ago, I had a hard time making English sentences in the office. I will tell you about this trouble some day.

Takenaka san and Katuma san

Takenaka san and Katuma san

You should know that Mr. Takenaka’s latest book, “Takenaka matrix”, is selling well these days. I asked my husband to borrow a copy of the book at the library near my home. Unfortunately, I was told that there were many people on the waiting list. In fact, I have already awaited the book copy for nearly two months, but it seems that there are still several people ahead of me on the list. I wonder when I can read it. The longer I wait, the more eagerly I want to read it.

I want to mention another book I am curious about, though I haven’t checked the copy at the library yet. The book title is “All that happens now was supposed to happen”. The author is Ms Katuma, who is a well-known economist. She runs a home page “Mugibatake” to assist women who are working or want to work, if my memory is correct.

I have heard that Mr. Takenaka refers to English study a little in his book. I want to know his input.

Short cut keys

As I mentioned, I use a PC mouse with my left hand. There is no doubt that I am happy that I was able to master the technique. However, I have to tell you something: there is a bad point to the usage.

For instance, you enter numbers and copy them. How do you do that? Do you click the right side on a mouse and click “Copy”? Instead, I want to press the “Ctrl” and “C” keys simultaneously. In order to do that, you need to set your left hand free, since the “C” key is nearer your left hand than your right hand. In this case, a mouse in your right hand would contribute to quicker movement than a mouse in your left hand.

Unfortunately, it is said that some of the short cut key functions don’t go well with a mouse in your left hand. Nevertheless, I prefer the left hand usage.

PC mouse

With which hand do you move a mouse, right or left?

I am right handed, so it is no wonder that I used to move a PC mouse with my right hand. That means that when I held a mouse in my right hand and I needed to use a pencil, I had to detach my right hand from the mouse to free it up. My right hand was busy while my left hand was sleeping. I fully knew that both of my hands were not treated equally, but they had to endure the situation, since I wasn’t lefty.

A couple of years ago, I happened to see a girl moving a mouse with her left hand very elegantly. Then, I asked her, “Are you lefty?”, expecting her answer would be definitely yes. On the contrary, she answered, “No.” I continued, “You are now using this mouse with your left hand, right? Why?” She answered again with a pretty smile on her face, “’Cause this way enables me to use both of my hands simultaneously. Basically, I am right handed as you are. Look! Using this mouse, I can enter numbers with no trouble. You can use even chopsticks while you keep on moving a mouse. Plus, have you ever heard this? Using your left hand can help your right brain function more actively.”

Since then, I had been trying to move a mouse with my left hand for a while. Imagine how hard it was for me to get used to a mouse in my left hand. At first, I was unable to move it as I liked. At times, I was much frustrated. What is worse, I mistakenly deleted necessary data, which drove me crazy. However, I eventually managed to master this new usage. I think it took me a few months till I had no trouble.

Unfortunately, I am not sure whether my right brain works more effectively than before. But I bet that I can input data much faster now. Trust me. Using a mouse with your left hand can bring you benefit to some degree.
